Appropriating moving image archives architecturally

My paper for Architectural archives and the practice of history (SAH, Buffalo, April 2013) introduced moving image archives to architectural historians, and suggested ways they could be used for researching buildings, places and architects.

I was asked to make links and a filmography available, & so ...

FIND MOVING IMAGE ARCHIVES

  • The Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) has a links page with selected institutions and resources. Backissues of their journal The Moving Image are available via JStor.
  • The International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) offers a Find an affiliate searchable database. They also make available PDFs of their Journal of Film Preservation.
  • The National Film Preservation Board, of the Library of Congress offers links to Public Moving Image Archives and Research Centers.

SELECTED ARCHIVE CATALOGS

  • The SCI-Arc Media Archive, which launched September 2012.
  • UCLA’s Film & Television Archive provides a library catalog for its holdings in almost every type of moving image document.
  • The main catalog of the Library of Congress permits searches of their moving image collection, provided Material Type is set as limited to Moving Image or Slide/Transparency.
  • A number of general library catalogs, from WorldCat.org down to the smallest local collections database can yield moving image resources, as long as there is a way to limit searches by video, motion picture, DVD or similar material terms.
  • FIAF’s Treasures from the film archives (via Chadwyck.com) provides brief information on over 47,000 silent-era “features as well as short films, and actualities as well as fictional works,” and identifies copies in the collection of archives around the world.
  • Filmarchives Online provides partial access to FIAF archives in Europe.
  • The Internet Movie Image Database (IMDb) originated in 1990 as a Usenet bulletin board of movie fans pooling their resources as unaccredited information hobbyists, Absorbed by Amazon in 1998, the user-generated info has been largely displaced by PR material contributed by production companies.
  • The American Film Institute (AFI) Catalog of Feature Films (via Chadwyck.com) claims to be the “national filmography documenting the history of American cinema.” Cataloguing currently covers the years 1893-1974 comprehensively, with additional records covering selected major films from 1975 onwards.
